3 DAYS TO EXPLORE THE TREASURES OF THE FRENCH RIVIERA

Letโs kick off this south of France road trip itinerary in Nice, a major city on the French Riviera where itโs easy to rent a car if you donโt already have one.
DAY 1 : Discover Nice and its colorful Old Town
Nice is an emblem of both the French Riviera and Provence. Itโs best known for the “Promenade des Anglais” and its old town with a strong Italian feel. Here are the most beautiful places you can explore in one day :

- Start your walk at the famous Place Massena, recognizable by its black-and-white tiled ground, colorful buildings, and seven statues that light up at night.
- Continue towards the “Coulee Verte” (Paillon walking), a true green lung in the heart of the city. This landscaped urban park is surrounded by trees and features chairs and benches, large wooden sculptures for children, water mirrors, and more. In short, itโs a refreshing haven, especially welcome in summer.
- At the end of the “Coulรฉe Verte”, youโll reach the beautiful Garibaldi place. With its yellow faรงades adorned with trompe-lโลil details and its many cafรฉ and restaurant terraces, itโs an open invitation to relax.
- Continue your exploration of Nice’s old town, wandering through cobbled streets lined with colorful buildings. Youโll experience a lively yet laid-back atmosphere, with the traditional Saleya court’s market, small souvenir and local product shops, charming squares, and landmarks such as Sainte-Reparate cathedral.
- Castle hill (Colline du Chรขteau) is another must-see during your visit to Nice, if only for the breathtaking views it offers over the deep blue Mediterranean, the endless “Promenade des Anglais”, and the red rooftops of the Nice’s old town. You can walk up or take the free elevator located on Ponchettes street.
- Finally, donโt miss the famous “Promenade des Anglais”. Popular with walkers and sports enthusiasts alike, this seaside promenade runs alongside pebble beaches and features the cityโs iconic blue chairs where you can admire the sea. Itโs also home to some of Niceโs most prestigious hotels, such as the Negresco. After your walk, why not lay down your towel and enjoy a swim in the stunning turquoise water ?

DAY 2 : Exploring the famous villages of the Riviera
The French Riviera is full of charming little villages overlooking the sea. Weโve selected our five favorites for you.

Villefranche-sur-mer
Villefranche-sur-Mer is all about narrow, steep streets, colorful village houses, and above all, a remarkable bay with shimmering water. The old town is quite small, so donโt be afraid to get lost while exploring it ! Youโll find a small harbor, restaurants serving local specialties, and standout landmarks such as Saint-Michel church and the Jean Cocteau chapel. The village is also known for its faรงades ranging from yellow to red, adorned with plants and blooming bougainvillea.
๐ Donโt miss : Swim at the famous Marinieres beach. With a mix of sand and fine pebbles, itโs almost always calm. The water is clear and the view over the bay is stunning. Paid parking and facilities available.
To reach the next stop, Eze-sur-Mer, we recommend driving along the Lower Corniche for elevated views over Villefranche-sur-Mer and its bay.

Eze-sur-Mer
This medieval hilltop village has exceptional charm. For us, itโs the most beautiful village on the French Riviera. Its โeagleโs nestโ setting, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Mediterranean sea, combined with its exotic garden, makes it a true gem. The steep cobbled streets and stone houses add character and authenticity to the place.
We recommend visiting the famous Exotic Garden (entry fee โฌ10 – tip : buy your tickets online). As you stroll along the small paths, youโll be amazed by the surrounding landscapes and the carefully designed spaces filled with cacti and succulents, wooden loungers, fountains, and more.
๐ Donโt miss : Admire one of the most beautiful panoramas on the French Riviera from the Exotic Garden.
If you have time, you can walk up to the village of Eze from the seaside via the stunning Nietzsche path, which connects the coast to the village 400 meters higher. Allow about 1.5 hours to climb up (2.1 km โ 400 m elevation gain) and 45 minutes to descend.

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
Once a fishing village, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat has become a renowned seaside resort dotted with luxurious villas favored by the jet set. Youโll find many restaurants and shops in the village center, a lovely small harbor, a church with typical architecture, and several beaches. The famous Ephrussi de Rothschild villa is especially worth visiting for its magnificent gardens.
๐ Donโt miss : Walk the Cap Ferrat coastal path. It starts at Passable beach, takes about 1.5 hours, and ends at the beautiful Paloma beach. This seaside walk is stunning, passing by lovely coves and offering exceptional Mediterranean views throughout.

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin
Located on the heights of the French Riviera, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin will charm you with its narrow cobbled streets and colorful houses. This medieval village has managed to preserve its authenticity. Donโt miss Deux Frรจres place and its thousand-year-old olive tree, Chรขteau street, Rue Fontaine street, Montcollet street, or Sainte-Marguerite church.
๐ Donโt miss : Watch the sunset from the medieval castle of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Youโll be captivated by the view over the village rooftops, the striking orange bell tower, and the Mediterranean sea. Entry โฌ5, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (hours may vary by season).

Cap dโAil
Located between Eze and Monaco, Cap dโAil is a seaside resort with many highlights. First, its splendid coastal path offers extraordinary views over the crystal-clear waters of the French Riviera. Its idyllic beaches and coves, surrounded by typical Provenรงal nature (especially Mala beach), are breathtaking. Beautiful landmarks such as Terrasses castle and its gardens, as well as Camelias villa, are also worth a visit.
๐ Donโt miss : Admire the bay of Cap dโAil and Monaco from the top of “Tete de Chien”. Park at the La Turbie swimming pool parking lot, then walk 10โ15 minutes to the viewpoint.
– Glamorous excursion –
Opt for a day trip to the most beautiful villages of the French Riviera. Youโll discover places such as Cannes, Villefranche, Eze, Antibes, and Monaco. Shopping, visiting art galleries, indulging in perfumes, walking the famous red carpet, and much more, all crowned with breathtaking Mediterranean views.
DAY 3 : Eploring picturesque villages
Holidays in south of France isnโt just about sunbathing on paradise beaches ! Itโs also about discovering picturesque villages and natural beauties in the hinterland. Between villages and rivers, thereโs no shortage of places to explore.
Hauts-de-Cagnes
Perched on the hill overlooking Cagnes-sur-Mer, this village is nicknamed the โlittle Montmartre of the French Riviera.โ Matisse, Renoir, Modigliani, and many other artists once lived here, embracing a bohemian lifestyle. The village is small and quick to explore, but youโll be truly enchanted. Wander through the surrounding lanes and youโll come across old buildings, colorful houses covered in greenery, vaulted passageways, a castle (once owned by the Grimaldi family), a chapel, and a church.
๐ Donโt miss : Attend the quirky square boules championship in august, a traditional game from the region.

Biot
Biot is a hilltop village with a distinctly Italian feel, much like others in this part of the French Riviera. Youโll be charmed by its red-orange faรงades and narrow cobbled streets. Cafรฉs, restaurants, shops, and art galleries warmly welcome visitors, making the old town well worth a stop. Made famous by Fernand Leger, Biot is also known as the capital of contemporary glass.
At the end of september, the Biot International Glass Festival takes place, with glass-blowing demonstrations and art exhibitions filling the streets. Donโt miss a visit to the famous Biot Glassworks.
๐ Donโt miss : Step back into the Middle Ages during the Templarsโ Festival in april, the regionโs largest medieval event, featuring knight battles, medieval music, and artisan villages. Three full days of festivities for all ages !
Saint-Paul-de-Vence
For us, this is one of the most beautiful villages in the region. Perched on a rocky spur and surrounded by typical Provenรงal nature, it has managed to retain its authenticity despite its popularity. Characterful houses with flower-filled faรงades, narrow cobbled streets, art galleries, small boutiques, and local restaurants invite you to wander at a leisurely pace. The village also offers stunning views over the valley from its ramparts.
๐ Donโt miss : Visiting the former home of famous poet Jacques Prevert, located on Cassette street. At the right time of year, youโll be amazed by the jasmine-covered faรงade in full bloom.

Tourettes-sur-Loup
Located 45 minutes from Nice, Tourrettes-sur-Loup is a fortified village built on a rocky spur. With its narrow cobbled streets lined with old stone houses, itโs a true concentration of beauty and authenticity. Youโll pass through two well-preserved medieval gates, walk along the famous “GrandโRue”, discover charming squares and fountains, and spot the castle that now houses the town hall. Exceptional panoramas await you as well. The village is also home to art galleries and artisan workshops.
๐ Donโt miss : Take part in the Violet Festival in march. Delicate and fragrant, this flower is one of the villageโs treasures. You can also visit “La Bastide aux Violettes”, a museum dedicated to this local emblem.
Les Gorges du Loup
Take the road through the “Gorges du Loup” towards the “Saut du Loup” waterfalls. Thereโs a small entrance fee (โฌ1), but itโs well worth it. For experienced hikers, several trails allow you to explore the gorges. One particularly beautiful hike offers stunning views over the surrounding landscapes : see description of the hike.
The “Pont de la Cerise”
Starting from the charming hilltop village of Gilette, follow the yellow trail markers through the forest along the river. This 8 km hike, known as the โClue de la Cerise,โ leads to the famous medieval bridge, the “Pont de la Cerise”, surrounded by white rocks and turquoise water. Although swimming is prohibited in the Esteron valley, you can still enjoy a refreshing break by the river.

– Guided tour of medieval villages –
Grasse, Gourdon, Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, explore the typical villages of Provence with an expert guide! During this tour, youโll discover everything that makes the Nice hinterland so charming, along with its specialties : violet ice cream, perfumery, art, and more.

In the old town : the Apparthรดtel AMMI offer great value for money. The studios are comfortable and well equipped, and the location is ideal for exploring Nice on foot.
By the sea : If you want to treat yourself to a hotel with sea views, choose the classic La Pรฉrouse with its panorama over the Promenade des Anglais, or Le Mรฉridien and its exceptional rooftop.
3 DREAM DAYS IN THE VAR, BETWEEN BEACHES AND COASTAL TRAILS

The Var, our favorite department, clearly cannot be explored in just three days. Paradise beaches, charming small villages, and famous gorges… For us, the Var is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Even if you wonโt be able to see everything, weโve put together an itinerary that will allow you to discover quite a few natural treasurs.
DAY 4 : The Unique Beauty of the Esterel, Between Red Rocks and Turquoise Sea
For the fourth day of this road trip itinerary in south of France, we completely change scenery with the striking red rocks of the Esterel. With our selection, youโll pass through the most beautiful spots in this part of this region.
Mandelieu-la-Napoule and Its โFeet-in-the-Waterโ castle
We start the day in Mandelieu-la-Napoule. Located at the entrance to the Esterel massif, this charming Riviera town is the perfect place to begin the day. With its marina, forest, and beaches, itโs an ideal destination for a relaxing vacation.
Must-see highlights
- The stunning seaside castle. Visit the interior, then enjoy a short walk along the coastal path from the castle beach to La Raguette beach.
- The lush nature of the Grand Duc forest. If you visit between january and march, youโll be able to admire the impressive mimosa forest in full bloom.
- San Peyre mount, offering panoramic views over the Bay of Cannes and the Lerins islands.

๐ Donโt miss : The Grand Mimosa Festival held every february : a full week of celebrations honoring one of the most iconic flowers of the French Riviera.
The “Corniche dโOr” and Its Dreamlike Coves
Just beyond Mandelieu lies the Golden Corniche or “Corniche dโOr” in french. Carved into the red rock of the Esterel massif and offering spectacular views over the Mediterranean, the Golden Corniche is one of the most beautiful roads in the world. If possible, we recommend riding it on two wheels. It makes it much easier to stop and access the small coves lining the road.

If weather conditions allow, we also recommend a guided sea-kayaking trip departing from Agay bay. Accompanied by an expert guide specializing in local flora and fauna, youโll paddle past the most beautiful spots along the Golden Corniche. Itโs another wonderful way to admire the red rock landscapes while being fully immersed in natur.
– The Most Beautiful COVES –
โฆ and its exceptional underwater world
โฆ a wild and breathtaking spot
โฆ with crystal-clear water
โฆ allowing access to the island of the same name by paddleboard, canoe, or even swimming for the most adventurous
โฆ surrounded by red rocks, this cove feels like another world
โฆ also composed of red rocks and offering views over the Lerins islands
๐ Don’t miss : The hike to “Cap Roux”, which offers exceptional panoramic views over the Mercantour mountains, the Esterel massif, and the Mediterranean sea.
– EstErel COVES by Boat –
Discover this natural reserve, accessible only by sea, aboard a rigid inflatable boat. Guided by an expert, youโll learn all about the hidden treasures of the Estรฉrel calanques: secluded coves, natural pools, wild caves, then itโs time to dive into the crystal-clear water.
Saint-Raphaรซl, the Var Town Thatโs Both Chic and Laid-Back
To end the day, we head to Saint-Raphael, either to explore its old town or to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere around the harbor.
You can also take a seaside walk starting from the Santa Lucia harbour (paid and free parking available). Head left to join the coastal path carved into the rock. We recommend walking as far as the Fournas cove, a stunning cove with turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling.
๐ Don’t miss : Throughout the summer, Saint-Raphael hosts festive events such as fireworks displays and open-air cinema screenings.
DAY 5: The Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the Jewel of the Var
Hereโs a summary of the must-do experiences in this stunning part of the region. Weโve shared much more detail in our one-week road trip in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, but below is a condensed version.
The Cap Taillat Coastal Trail

This is the most beautiful coastal trail weโve ever done in southern France. Starting from the Escalet beach in Ramatuelle, this path winds past paradise-like coves and offers panoramic views over Cap Taillat. We also recommend hiking up to the summit of the cape to enjoy views over Bonporteau bay and The Briande beach.
– Practical information –
๐ Starting point : the Escalet beach parking lot, paid from march to october โ Limited spaces
๐ Duration : 1.5 hours round trip (excluding the climb to Cap Taillat)
๐ Don’t miss : A refreshing swim away from the crowds at the Briande beach, one of our all-time favorites.
– OTHER ACTIVITY IDEAS –
Enjoy this sublime coastline from the water by canoe-kayak or paddleboard, or by booking a catamaran excursion. Youโll be able to explore the coast more easily, stop at secluded coves, and go snorkeling.
ENHANCE YOUR ITINERARY WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES OF SAINT-TROPEZ AND SURROUNDINGS
Saint-Tropez
Despite its glamorous reputation, Saint-Tropez is actually a former fishing village with undeniable charm. We recommend visiting during peak season to fully enjoy its lively atmosphere.

– Donโt miss –
๐ The narrow streets, passageways, and boutiques (Garonne traverse, “Passage Clemenceau”, Sube hotel)
๐ Walking around the village along the beaches, especially La Ponche beach, the Citadel, and Lices place
๐ The beaches of Saint-Tropez are just as beautiful as those in nearby Ramatuelle. If you only visit one, choose Canoubiers bay, just a 10-minute drive from the town center.
A spot we particularly love in Saint-Tropez is Herbes place, where you can enjoy oysters or zucchini flower fritters (“Chez Madeleine”), buy the best cheeses in town at the marketโs cheese shop, or savor ultra-fresh seafood at the fish market.
๐ Don’t miss : tasting the delicious apricot tarts from “Boulangerie “Les Deux Freres” bakery, our guilty pleasure every time we visit Saint-Tropez.
Grimaud
Grimaud is a surprising and delightful destination. Between village, nature, and coastline, your day here will be full.

– Suggested itinerary in Grimaud –
– Little Train Excursion –
Combine a visit to Port Grimaud with an excursion to the Grimaud village. A small tourist train acts as an original shuttle, taking you through the French countryside to the medieval village. An audio guide shares the villageโs history during the ride, and once you arrive, youโre free to explore at your own pace.
DAY 6 : Getaway to the Lavandou and Visit of Bormes-les-Mimosas
Continuing along the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, we take you to two iconic southern destinations famous for their paradise beaches.
The Coastal Path and Beaches of Le Lavandou
Le Lavandou stretches largely along the coastline and is known as โthe resort of 12 beaches,โ all featuring white sand and crystal-clear waters.

– DON’T MISS –
๐ The coastal path between Saint-Clair beach and La Fossette beach. Walking over smooth rocks, walkways, and small staircases, youโll follow turquoise waters perfect for swimming. This coastal trail can also be accessed from the town center harbor (3 km).
๐ Jean Blanc, Elephant, Aiguebelle, and Fossette beaches are our favorites. Jean Blanc beach is particularly spectacular but gets crowded quickly in summer.
Bormes-Les-Mimosas
Near Le Lavandou, we recommend stopping in Bormes-les-Mimosas to discover its flower-filled village and white-sand beaches.
๐ Donโt miss : strolling through the village during bougainvillea blooming season (may to september).

Bormes-les-Mimosas is best known for Breganรงon fort, the french presidentโs summer residence. Above all, it boasts a dream coastline with a succession of wild beaches and crystal-clear waters. One of the most famous is Estagnol beach.
We personally prefer exploring these landscapes via the coastal trail, especially since some beaches are only accessible on foot. This includes Pellegrin, Leoube, La Vignasse, Mere Dieu, and Grand Jardin beaches.

To see them all, start the walk at Argentiere beach in La Londe-les-Maures (free parking). Youโll also pass even more secluded coves. Along with the Cap Taillat trail, this is one of the most beautiful coastal hikes in southern France.

– Hiking Alternatives –
๐ A snorkeling excursion in the stunning Port-Cros National Park (departing from La Londe).
๐ An exceptional cruise aboard a maxi-catamaran : a full day discovering Breganรงon and Porquerolles.
– MORE Things to Do in the Var –
If you decide to extend your holidays in the Var, we recommend an excursion to the Giens peninsula. Youโll hike one of the most beautiful coastal trails overlooking paradise coves and translucent waters. You can also explore this coastline by paddleboard or canoe to access sea caves such as the cave at Ble cove. The most famous beaches on the Giens peninsula are Almanarre and La Capte.
Where to Stay in the Var ?
The Gulf of Saint-Tropez is the ideal base for easily exploring the regionโs main attractions. Accommodation options are plentiful. Here are our recommendations :
In Saint-Tropez : Staying here is the ultimate choice if your budget allows. We love the ultra-chic Le Kube, but La Figuiรจre is just as elegant and charming.
In Grimaud or Gassin : Perfect if youโre looking for peace and quiet. We recommend Le Clos des Oliviers for its fully equipped apartments and swimming pool, as well as the authentic Bello Visto with its exceptional terrace views.
In Cavalaire-sur-Mer : Close to sandy beaches, this is an ideal base for families. Our pick is Belle Vue hostel near the sea. You can even book a room with a private pool.
In Cogolin : perfect for small budgets, you can book accommodation at a lower cost.
3 DAYS DISCOVERING THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF VERDON

We continue this road trip through the south of France with a destination packed with natural treasures : the Verdon ! With its emerald-green lakes and charming stone villages, itโs a perfect destination for lovers of nature and history.
DAY 7 : The Most Iconic interest point – Sainte-Croix lake and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie
These two places may be very well known, but they remain absolute must-sees when visiting the Verdon region.
Sainte-Croix lake and the Upper Verdon Gorges
Sainte-Croix lake is quite large, and itโs impossible to go all the way around it in a single day, so we suggest choosing between three different experiences:
– Paddle Through the Upper Verdon Gorges –
By canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, this area is obviously stunning, but very crowded in summer. To enjoy it peacefully, we recommend visiting during the off-season (just remember to bring your own equipment, as rental shops may be closed). The starting point for this water route is at the Galetas bridge.

– Explore the Submerged Forest –
Much like the bayous of Louisiana, the Verdon also has trees growing directly out of the water. Itโs as surreal as it is beautiful ! There are several spots, but our favorite submerged forest is accessed from Amour beach in Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon.

– Paddle Around Costebelle Island –
The departure point is the Salles-sur-Verdon village. This is a wild and unspoiled area where youโll also pass through a magnificent submerged forest. Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards can be rented at the harbour of Les Salles-sur-Verdon.

The Village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Capital of Faience
The most beautiful village in the Verdon is the famous Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. Picturesque and full of charm, it is nestled between rocky cliffs, above which hangs a star with a mysterious history.
Between waterfalls, colorful facades, faience workshops, and local craft shops, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is an essential stop on any road trip through the south of France.

๐ Don’t miss : The climb up to the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel to contemplate the unique view over the village, the Maire valley, and the Valensole plateau.
DAY 8 : The Wildest treasurs : Esparron lake near Greoux-les-Bains
Esparron lake
This is a more secluded spot in the Verdon Gorges, although it remains popular with visitors in summer. From the village of Esparron-de-Verdon, you can paddle around the lake by canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, by far the best way to fully appreciate its beauty. Expect between 4 and 6 hours depending on how often you stop. You can also rent an electric boat for a faster and more effortless option.

From Esparron lake, itโs also possible to paddle up the gorges toward Quinson lake. The scenery is just as spectacular, and you may even spot vultures along the cliffs.
Access to the Lake
- From the village of Esparron*
- From the “Pont Coupรฉ” natural site. This is where we usually start and is the easiest option if you want to explore both the lake and the gorges*
- From Saint-Julien beach. This is the ideal spot to discover the wildest part of the lake (near the dam), including two stunning areas : Galerie valley and Sauvage lake*
* All three access points offer watercraft rentals.
๐ Don’t miss : A hidden cabin located along the shores of Esparron lake. Start from “Pont Coupรฉ”, paddle to the left for about 30 minutes into the gorges, and youโll find the “Cabane des Indiens” on the right-hand shore.
The Thermal Town of Greoux-les-Bains
Located about 20 minutes from Esparron-de-Verdon lake, Greoux-les-Bains is a charming spa town where we love to take a relaxing break and wander through the old town after a paddleboarding session.
๐ Don’t miss : Enjoying a drink in the shade at “La Terrasse des Marronniers”.
DAY 9 : The Most Spectacular : The “Route des Crรชtes” and the Panoramic Road
The route des crรชtes
The Route des Crรชtes is legendary and ranks among the most beautiful roads in the world. Imagine a succession of 14 viewpoints overlooking the Verdon Gorges across 24 kilometers !

It can easily be driven in 2 to 3 hours, but the total time will of course depend on how many stops you make and how long you spend admiring the dramatic cliffs and local wildlife.
– Our Favorite Viewpoints –
Our number one favorite
Less touristy than the others, with a small trail leading to the viewpoint
With a superb panoramic view on both sides of the gorges
Also offering a beautiful viewpoint
Last in the ranking as itโs less spectacular, but still a must-see !
– MORE Things to Do in the Verdon –
If you have extra time to enjoy the Verdon Gorges, we recommend experiencing one (or more) of these unforgettable activities :
- Paddle through the Gorges de Baudinard by canoe or kayak (rigid boats). This unique canyon ends with a spectacular finale: a series of enchanting waterfalls cascading along the cliffs. In high season, plan to rent your canoe at Aquattitude ! (departure from Montpezat lake).
- Enjoy a majestic sunset at Les Salles-sur-Verdon. Itโs the perfect spot, with submerged trees and the stunning Costebelle island as the backdrop. GPS point : 43.76327215095227, 6.210568059941361
- Between mid-June and mid-July, take a guided tour of the most beautiful lavender fields.
- Discover authentic villages such as Riez, Allemagne-en-Provence, or Saint-Martin-de-Bromes.
- And for the more adventurous, challenge yourself with an aquatic hike through the gorges!
Where to Stay in the Verdon ?
Here are three perfect places to stay during your visit to the Verdon :
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie : if you had to choose just one, this would be it! Our favorite is the beautiful guesthouse La Fabrique where we had a truly wonderful experience.
Greoux-les-Bains : our go-to relaxation spot after a day of paddleboarding on Lake Esparron. We were lucky enough to stay one night at Villa Castellane and everything was perfect !
Bauduen : geographically ideal, as itโs centrally located between the activities mentioned above. Bauduen is a charming village with several traditional restaurants and lovely terraces overlooking Sainte-Croix lake.
2 DAYS VISITING THE LUBERONโS MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES

A visit of the best villages of Luberon is an essential activity if youโre traveling in the south of France. In our opinion, summer is the perfect time to enjoy the atmosphere, as the villages are livelier than in the off-season while retaining their incredible charm.
Exploring the Luberon means soaking up that quintessentially Provenรงal ambiance, with its nature, old stone buildings, traditions, and gastronomy. It also means driving along long roads lined with lavender and olive fields, while marveling at the regionโs beauty.
– Luberon Road Trip Tip –
Staying at Avignon is a good compromise for exploring the Luberon. Youโll find accommodation more easily, sometimes at a lower cost, and you can travel each day between the various points of interest. Plus, if you prefer guided tours of the Luberonโs most beautiful villages, there are plenty of excursions departing from Avignon.
DAY 10 : Discovering Saignon, Lauris, and Bonnieux

Saignon is a treasur of Luberon. Like all perched villages, it offers exceptional viewpoints over the entire valley. No matter the season, we never tire of admiring its beautiful Fontaine place. Surrounded by ivy-covered stone houses, the square features a moss-covered fountain, a washhouse, and a large plane tree, perfect for some summer shade.
Next, continue your road trip toward Lauris. This village is relatively unknown and was a delightful surprise when we discovered it on a weekend trip. Donโt miss the garden of dye plants, which offers a panoramic view over the Durance valley and the Alpilles.
Finish the day with a visit to Bonnieux, the highest village in the Luberon. Even though itโs slightly more touristy than the others, Bonnieux has a warm atmosphere with its cafรฉs, restaurants, cobblestone streets, and century-old trees. The village also showcases its heritage through a path with 15 informative panels. Before leaving, donโt miss the stunning panoramic view from the upper church.
DAY 11 : Lacoste, Menerbes, and Oppedes-le-Vieux to end on a high note !

Lacoste is a charming village, but unlike any other, as time seems to have stood still here. Indeed, the castle and most houses were purchased by Pierre Cardin in 2001, and the village was almost emptied of its residents to become an open-air museum. Many art shops now line the cobbled streets, contrasting with the facades of former businesses. This unique character also makes it attractive to passing tourists.
Menerbes has rightly earned its title as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Perched firmly on its rocky spur, Menerbes will charm you with its Provenรงal-style houses, small gardens adorned with fountains, and rich historical heritage. For the best view over the Luberon landscapes, head next to the clock tower !
Finally, discover the best village of the Luberon : Oppรจde-le-Vieux. This small village is incredibly authentic, with its old stone buildings, narrow streets, and pretty little square. Surrounded by lush nature, itโs a real treasure of the region. The climb up to the Notre-Dame-Dalidon church is a must if you want to admire the rooftops of Oppedes-le-Vieux in a unique setting.
– MORE things to do in the Luberon –
- Admire the beauty of the lavender fields if youโre in the south from late June to mid-July. The most famous site is the Valensole Plateau, but you can also find fields around the Sรฉnanque Abbey, Bonnieux, Gordes, and Roussillon. Donโt hesitate to hire a knowledgeable guide to visit the most beautiful lavender fields !
- Explore the impressive ruins of the Buoux Fortress, with magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. The return path takes you down a staircase carved into the rock. Open in good weather Wednesday to Monday, 10 a.m.โ5 p.m. โ entrance โฌ6. All the details here
- Hike to the tiny village at the edge of the world, Sivergues. Starting from Buoux, youโll follow a stream through the woods up to the village, enjoying extraordinary views of the Buoux cliffs, passing bories, and even troglodyte dwellings.

A DAY OUT IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS IN CAMARGUE

Between pink salt flats and wild nature, spending a day in this region will show you another side of the south. The long, deserted beaches that line the salt marshes are one of its distinctive features. Camargue has many points of interest, and itโs impossible to see everything in just one day. Hereโs our selection :
DAY 12 : Admire the flamingos at the “Pont de Gau” Ornithological Park
Camargue has numerous ponds where you can observe flamingos, but the best spot for us is undoubtedly the Pont de Gau Ornithological Park. We visited at sunset, and the sight of flamingos taking flight was spectacular !

Youโll walk a one-hour discovery trail with informative panels about the surrounding wildlife. There are also several observation points for the different bird species of Camargue. This makes it a very fun activity, ideal for a family outing.
– Practical information –
๐ Price : Adults โฌ8,50 / Children โฌ5

When to see flamingos in Camargue ?
Flamingos are present all year on Camargueโs ponds. They are more numerous in summer, from august to september, making them easier to spot. To witness their unique courtship displays, visit between december and march. In winter, their pink color is even more vivid than in summer.
– MORE things to do in Camargue –
- Visit a typical Camargue village, like Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a coastal town with both gypsy and catholic cultural influences. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer church and the small town center add to its charm. Despite its touristy feel, you can find good restaurants like La Casita.
- Go on an e-bike safari with a passionate guide, getting up close to nature and discovering Camargueโs beauties along the trails : horses, bulls, flamingos, marshes, vineyards, and more.
- Explore the pink salt flats of Aigues-Mortes by small train, perfect for memorable photo stops. You can also walk the 4km route, with or without a guide. The lakes are at their pinkest from late June to early august. Book tickets in advance !
- Take an 3-in-1excursion 3 en 1 from Avignon : Pont de Gau Ornithological Park, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, and Aigues-Mortes.
- Enjoy a relaxing day at Piemanson, a 7-km-long wild beach in a protected natural area. Fine sand with driftwood makes it the perfect spot to feel completely alone. Free parking / Toilets available.
Where to stay in Camargue ?
We recommend staying in the Camargue capital, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. This typical seaside town offers all types of accommodation (farmhouses, hotels, campsites, manades, and unique lodgings). Our picks in and near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer :
Pont Blanc hostel : Ideal location just steps from the sea. Nicely decorated rooms, plus the pool and gardens are a real bonus. >> Book a room at Pont Blanc hostel
Barres farmhouse : Close to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and convenient for visiting Aigues-Mortes. Beautiful rooms with a private garden and pool. Our favorite : the nearby horse park for a full Camargue immersion. >>> Book a room at “Mas des Barres”
Menage farmhouse : Authentic and family-friendly with comfortable rooms. Extra touch: musical evenings with flamenco vibes! >>> Book a room at “Mas du Menage”
3 DAYS VISITING MARSEILLE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

To end this 15-day road trip itinierary in the South of France on a high note, what better way than visiting Franceโs second-largest city ! Marseille, our adopted city that we would never want to leave. Two days are really not enough to discover all the facets of this sunny city, but weโve selected the best spots for you.
We also reserve a special day to explore the surrounding Provence. Of course, you can stay a third day in Marseille and find further ideas in our itinerary for visiting Marseille in 3 days.
DAY 13 : Urban stroll through the typical neighborhoods
When asked what to do in Marseille ? Our first answer is : stroll through its different neighborhoods to discover its authenticity.
In the morning, we suggest an unmissable encounter with Marseille life : the famous fish market at the Vieux-Port, featuring fresh produce and a guaranteed lively atmosphere ! Take the opportunity to walk along the quays near the town hall to enjoy views of the sailboats and Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica in the distance.
We then split the afternoon into two parts :
๐ First, discover the MUCEM, the museum with its lace-like concrete architecture, connected by walkways to Saint-Jean fort. Our favorite activity is walking along the ramparts while exploring the gardens and terraces. Along the way, youโll enjoy stunning views of the Mediterranean sea and the Vieux-Port. The best panorama is actually at the top of the Roy Renรฉe tower.

๐ Next, head to the oldest and most typical neighborhood of the city : the Panier district. A visit of the Panier quarter in Marseille during your south of France road trip is a must. Colorful alleyways, facades and sidewalks decorated and planted by locals, Provenรงal squares, artisan shops, and local bistros, thereโs plenty to see ! Throughout your walk, you can also admire the street art decorating the walls. And for fans of tv-serie โPlus belle la vie,โ this is the neighborhood that inspired the seriesโ sets.

– How to explore THe Panier DISTRICT ? –
- Participate in a real treasure hunt ! Anecdotes and puzzles to solve about the neighborhood, streets, urban furniture, monuments, etcโฆ Perfect for a fun family or friendsโ outing.
- Weโve also created an itinerary that covers almost all the points of interest ! Feel free to wander through adjacent streets to make sure you donโt miss anything. Start at Montรฉe des Accoules and finish at Bargemon place with its beautiful view of the Vieux-Port.
DAY 14 : Between typical nature and turquoise waters : the Coves
The Calanques between Marseille and Cassis are breathtakingly beautiful, and you absolutely must explore at least one ! Ideally, visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds, especially in summer. All the ones listed here are only accessible on foot (or by boat).
Itโs also a great opportunity for a guided hiking day. In the middle of stunning landscapes, youโll discover incredible coastal views, explore caves, and enjoy endless photo stops. Itโs a moderately challenging effort, but it makes swimming in these paradise-like waters even more rewarding !
Hereโs our ranking of the most beautiful coves :

Sormiou cove
A true natural swimming pool, for us the number one for bathing. With a sandy beach, a few small huts, and a tiny port, the waterโs color will dazzle you !
To access this paradise :
๐ On foot via the road is easiest, about 40 minutes walk / there are also hiking routes from the parking in the Baumettes district),
๐ By car from october 1 to April 30 (โฌ10 parking), outside these dates, you must book at the restaurant Le Chรขteau of Sormiou to drive down.

en Vau cove
The most majestic thanks to the towering cliffs surrounding it. This calanque requires a fairly intense hike, but once at the bottom, youโll be enchanted by the scenery and the exceptional shades of blue.
To access this paradise :
๐ On foot only : park at the port-Miou peninsula (โฌ10) or in streets near Port-Miou. Walk to Port-Miou, then Port-Pin, and climb inland through the vegetation to reach En Vau. Descend carefully (slippery rocks). For the return, you can take the coastal path for stunning views.

Sugiton cove
The most unique with two turquoise-water coves separated by a rocky islet. The panoramas while descending are magnificent; take time to explore the different viewpoints. By circling the second cove, youโll enjoy a full-sea view on the other side.
To access this paradise :
๐ n foot only : park at the Luminy university center (free), then follow the wide track which ends in a long descent towards the cove. Allow around 2.5 hours of walking there and back. PLEASE NOTE : to limit the number of visitors to the Sugiton cove, the national park has set up a reservation system in high season, so remember to inquire here.

Port-Pin cove
Along with Port-Miou, this is the most accessible of all the Calanques mentioned. Less wild than En Vau but still charming, with a sandy and pebble beach, plus some more secluded spots on the surrounding rocks. We personally prefer visiting off-season to avoid crowds and enjoy its clear turquoise waters.
To access this paradise :
๐ On foot only : 30 minutes from the peninsula parking.

Morgiou cove
Less charming than its neighbors, but still offers spectacular panoramic views from above ! Nestled between two cliffs, its small beach after the port is beautiful, with surprising shades of blue. The cove is inhabited year-round, so youโll see huts, a fishing port, and a bar-restaurant where you can taste local seafood. The Blue cave is also here, accessible by swimming.
Access :
๐ From the parking lot in the Baumettes district, it takes around 1 hour to walk. Like Sormiou, its access is regulated all year round, so remember to find out here
– WARNING –
During periods of fire risk, the Calanques National Park may be closed to the public, so remember to check this here. CAlways check the current conditions and access rules for certain calanques. Those protect these fragile natural spaces.
DAY 15 : The Alpilles and its quintessential Provenรงal villages
On your third day in Marseille, donโt miss a short trip inland! Discover the Alpilles and its typical Provenรงal villages. Olive and vineyard fields stretch as far as the eye can see, perched villages set in authentic nature, the Alpilles are full of treasures worth visiting.
Baux-de-Provence
For us, it is the most charming of the small villages in the Alpilles. It is therefore essential to visit it during a road trip in the South of France. Located on a rocky outcrop, its pretty cobbled streets, stone houses and artisanal shops are a real invitation to stroll. Exploring the ruins of the castle as well as the immersive experience at the “Carriรจres des Lumiรจres” are original activities designed for young and old.
๐ Full guide to visit Les Baux-de-Provence
Best viewpoint : from the castle keep, enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the ruins, village rooftops, and the Alpilles.

Saint-Remy-de-Provence
It is a typically Provenรงal town where it is pleasant to stroll through the streets of its historic center.
The top things to do in Saint-Remy-de-Provence? Shopping in the region’s small designer and product boutiques, perfecting your culture at the Alpilles Museum, enjoying the charm of the squares while sipping a drink on the terrace, enjoying local products purchased at the market.
Recommended spot : “Chez Mamine”, a restaurant under plane trees on a charming square. Simple, tasty food in a pleasant setting.

– Excursion INto the heart of Provence –
Saint-Remy-de-Provence, Baux-de-Provence and Arles will no longer hold any secrets for you thanks to this guided tour. Supported by a passionate professional, you will be filled with anecdotes and exceptional views throughout the visit
Miramas-le-Vieux
It is a small medieval village perched with a breathtaking view of the Berre pond. The cobblestones of its streets and its beige stone houses make it unique.
You will be seduced, among other things, by the Notre-Dame gate and the magnificent Aleppo pine, the historical remains, the facades decorated with climbing plants and other decorations, the Notre-Dame-de-Beauvezer church and the belvedere with a sublime panorama.
Recommended spot : enjoy ice cream at Le Quillรฉ or on the terrace at Le Misto with views.

– MORE things to do AROUND MARSEILLE –
CASSIS

After a good day of walking and swimming in the coves, we always end the day by taking a walk in Cassis, eating an ice cream or having a drink on the terrace. It is no exaggeration to nickname this small port town the โlittle Saint-Tropezโ ! As soon as you arrive, you will be attracted by the sparkling water of its port and the traditional fishing boats. Also by the colorful houses all around and the restaurant terraces that spill onto the sidewalk.
In short, the ideal place to take a break while admiring the view. The center of Cassis is a small Provenรงal village which has retained its appeal despite the influx of tourists. During the walk, you will pass through shopping streets, squares with fountains in the shade of plane trees, a pรฉtanque court animated by regulars, the Grande Mer beach and then, further on, the Cassis lighthouse. Finally, the city being close to Port-Miou, Port-Pin and En Vau, take the opportunity to go on an guided excursion guidรฉe with a kayak in these magnificent coves !
THE Ciotat

Take the legendary “Route des Crรชtes” road which will take you to this small neighboring town of Cassis. Less known but worth the detour just to admire its famous coves! It also has some assets, such as its old port decorated with restaurant terraces from which you can observe the contrast between the traditional boats and the shipyard. Donโt hesitate to wander the streets behind the Notre-Dame de lโAssomption church, this is where you will find some pretty shops and squares. The Ciotat also has several sandy beaches including Grande Plage which is our favorite.
Finally, don’t leave without having seen the Mugel coves. You will even cross a pretty botanical park of the same name to go up to a belvedere with a breathtaking view. Don’t also miss the spectacular panorama from another viewpoint, that of Anse du Sec. The shades of blue with the gigantic red rock that plunges into the sea form an incredible setting. Concerning the activities, from climbing on the Trou du Souffleur to the kayak tour with discovery of secret caves and coves, you will be spoiled for choice !

Where to stay in Marseille
Marseille offers a wide range of accommodation options. If you want to enjoy the cityโs energy, here are our top 3 neighborhoods :
Vieux-Port : In the heart of the action, close to main attractions, restaurants, and shops. For an exceptional stay, book at the Grand Hรดtel Beauvau . Bonus : a stunning view over the Vieux-Port.
Panier distrist : The famous neighborhood that inspired โPlus belle la vieโ! A symbol of Marseille, it feels like a small village. We recommend the guesthouse le Couvent, a tastefully renovated historic building.
Canebiere : A large avenue connecting รglise des Rรฉformรฉs to the Vieux-Port. Bustling and popular, with shops, boutiques, and cosmopolitan restaurants. We prefer the Maison Montgrand hotel : quiet, ideally located, with a shaded terrace and comfortable rooms.
