Nicknamed the “Pearl of the Verdon”, Esparron lake is smaller and less well-known than Sainte-Croix lake. Yet the landscapes and surrounding nature are just as spectacular ! Add to that : water of an intense blue, sometimes turquoise along the shores, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of a little paradise…
As we’ll see, many activities are possible here, from the classic canoe outing to hiking in search of that secret cove ! It’s also a gateway to the Lower Gorges (Basses Gorges), the largest canyon in Europe. After covering the must-do activities in the Verdon, we’re sharing everything you need to know about Esparron lake, one of the region’s true treasure !

Following the construction of the Greoux dam, Esparron lake was filled in 1967. This led to the flooding of the entire plain overlooked by the village, raising the river level in the Lower Gorges as far as Quinson. In terms of surface area, this artificial reservoir is the third largest in the Verdon (after Sainte-Croix and Castillon lakes).

What to do at Esparron Lake ? Our to-do list
This is our favorite way to explore the lake, to feel alone in the world in the middle of this magical place, and above all to discover secluded swimming spots. Canoeing, paddleboarding, windsurfing, electric boats, pedal boats, you’ll be spoiled for choice! It’s also an ideal activity to enjoy with friends or family.
Several rental companies operate on Esparron lake, including “La Perle du Verdon” in Esparron-de-Verdon, as well as at the entrance to the Lower Gorges and at Saint-Julien beach.
Important: during peak season, remember to book your boat in advance, rentals sell out quickly !
Set off in search of caves and admire the limestone cliffs of this breathtaking canyon. Sportier visitors can even reach Quinson lake, located 9 km away ! Keen observers may also spot a small cabin hidden among the trees, perfect for living a Robinson Crusoe lifestyle.
A small hint : it’s hidden in a bend…
Follow the old canal keeper’s path starting from Saint-Julien beach toward “Île du Barbu”. Officially known as “Le Quartier”, this beautiful area is made up of meadows, small beaches, and shaded coves beneath ancient oak trees, with a direct view of the village of Esparron-de-Verdon.

On foot, it iakes about 4 to 5 days (see the hike description) / By paddleboard doable in one day, including relaxing breaks.
What could be better after a long day than a well-deserved afternoon treat ? We love the friendly atmosphere of Greoux-les-Bains and strolling through the narrow streets of the old town. “Les Marronniers” terrace is perfect, with its garden shaded by trees. We also enjoy stopping by “Maison Durandeu” to sample their delicious almond tiles, among other treats.

Where to swim at Esparron Lake ?
Several swimming spots are available, with several levels of accessibility (parking fees apply only during peak season) :
Located below the village and the public car park, this is the easiest to access, and therefore the busiest. The shoreline is mostly rocky, but one major advantage is the nearby facilities : water sports centers, bars, and restaurants. You can still find quieter spots by following the lakeside path.
Park at the public Lower Gorges car park. This area is also the starting point for excursions into the canyon or out onto the lake. If you prefer to relax without a water activity, you can settle below the car park. The area is shaded by tall pine trees and dotted with small coves.
On the opposite shore, this area is wilder and less crowded, as it’s only accessible by water or on foot via the canal keeper’s path (starting from Saint-Julien).
As mentioned earlier, this small peninsula is ideal, with its shaded beaches and coves surrounded by nature. You’ll find more opportunities for secluded spots here.
This is the closest beach to Greoux-les-Bains. Access is via a slightly bumpy road but it’s perfectly manageable with a standard car (parking costs €4 in July–August). We recommend not stopping directly at this beach but instead continue along the yellow and red marked trail to find nicer spots.
The best option is to get on the water with your own boat or rental and explore the western side of the Esparron lake, our favorite, as it’s more authentic and unspoiled. This is where you’ll find “Vallon de la Galerie”, Sauvage lake, submerged tree trunks, and many other natural wonders.
⚠️ This time, you’ll need to park along the roadside, so spaces are very limited (GPS point ). The path down to the lake is quite steep, please be careful. You may also encounter a few naturists in the coves along the trail.

The most beautiful viewpoint
To be truly dazzled by the vastness of the lake, its lush green surroundings and the intense blue of the water, the best panorama can be found from the road just after the Gréoux dam. You’ll need to park along the roadside and walk a short distance to reach this viewpoint : GPS point

👉 Explore the Gorges de baudinard with a canoe (book your canoe in advance).
👉 Discover the other Verdon lakes: the famous Lake Castillon, the majestic Lake Sainte-Croix and the more discreet Montpezat lake.

– OUR OPINION –
Esparron lake is just as magnificent as Sainte-Croix lake, with its turquoise waters and wild coves. The flagship activity in this corner of paradise is, of course, canoeing, an excellent way to get close to nature and fully appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscapes and limestone cliffs. There’s nothing better for escaping everyday life than feeling alone in the world, immersed in such exceptional surroundings. That’s why we return here often, especially to paddle along the wilder Saint-Julien side.
