– Did you know ? –
Two sandy strips connect Giens to the mainland, this rare geological formation is called a “double tombolo”. (There are only five in the world !) This natural feature took thousands of years to form. Without it, Giens would have remained an island. Two beaches border this double tombolo : Almanarre beach to the west, La Capte beach to the east. In the center lie the salt marshes, home to remarkably rich biodiversity.

Unfortunately, coastal erosion has threatened the western side in recent years. A proposed 400-meter offshore breakwater project designed to slow the erosion is currently on hold.
How to Get to Giens Peninsula ?
👉 By bus : From downtown Hyères, take Bus 67. The journey takes about 30 minutes. (See the schedule of bus). This is a convenient option during peak season, as parking fills up quickly.
👉 By train : Take the train to Hyères station, then continue by bus. (> Find your train route).
👉 By car : The best option if you want full flexibility. Several parking areas are available, whether you’re heading to the beaches or hiking trails. Keep in mind that during summer, parking spots become scarce as the day goes on.
👉 By bike : Several bike rental shops are located in Hyères town center. While possible, much of the route is along the main road, which makes it less enjoyable. The final stretch is more pleasant, either the bike path near La Capte or the scenic road running along the salt marshes toward Almanarre. Alternatively, you can begin your ride from La Capte and rent a bike locally, here : https://legarage-hyeres.fr/ or https://avelo83.com/
GIENS PENINSULA : MUST-DO ACTIVITIES
Swim at the Most Beautiful Beaches of Hyères and Giens
If you’re visiting during summer, you’ll have the chance to swim at some of the most stunning beaches on the peninsula. Here are our three favorites:
Almanarre beach
When sheltered from the wind, this long sandy beach feels idyllic. Its shallow, turquoise waters and natural dune backdrop create a postcard-perfect setting. Stretching nearly three miles (five kilometers), you’ll have plenty of space to lay your towel. We personally prefer the far end near the peninsula, it feels quieter and more scenic. Parking is available at both ends, which is convenient in high season. Almanarre is also a magical place to watch the sunset. On windy days, it becomes a paradise for kite surfers and windsurfers.

La Badine
Located just beyond La Bergerie, this side of the peninsula is ideal for families. The water remains extremely shallow for several yards, making it perfect for children. We prefer La Badine because it’s less crowded and feels more natural than the beaches near La Capte.
To access it, you’ll need to park in a dirt lot and walk about five minutes along a shaded path. You can also continue along the coastal trail to discover small hidden coves.

Darboussières beach
More secluded and wilder than the previous two, this beach is reached via a small pine-lined path. The shore is made of fine pebbles, and the crystal-clear water is rich in marine life. This intimate cove, surrounded by rocks, is perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts.
Arrive early, the parking area is quite small.

Enjoy Giens’ Exceptional Nature…
By Mountain Bike…
… if you enjoy cycling, several scenic routes run between land and sea. Trails pass by the Pesquiers Lagoon, La Tour Fondue, La Madrague Harbor, and the charming village of Giens. Depending on the route, you’ll enjoy beautiful views over the Mediterranean and even toward Porquerolles Island.
Some routes are available online ( here, here or here , but note that certain sections can be technical).
On foot…
… walking on the famous coastal trail that circles the peninsula is, in our opinion, the best way to truly experience its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. With spectacular Mediterranean views and countless swimming stops, you’ll be amazed.
Hiking on the Giens peninsula is accessible to most visitors, although some sections are slightly steep, take care with young children. Several routes are available, but our favorite remains the Pointe des Chevaliers trail.

Don’t forget : Before heading out, especially on windy days, check local access conditions for the Var forest areas.
Via Underwater Trails…
… in partnership with Port-Cros National Park, several underwater trails allow you to discover the region’s rich marine biodiversity. These marked snorkeling routes, accessible independently or with a guide, are perfect for exploring the underwater world.
Two notable locations include :
👉 In the baie du Niel
👉 At Pointe du Bouvet
Discover Paradise Coves…
You’ll encounter many of these hidden gems along the coastal hike. More or less accessible, they are essential if you want to appreciate the peninsula’s raw beauty. From dramatic cliff-top views to refreshing swims in clear waters, each one feels like a secret escape. Amon gthem :
👉 Escampo-Barriou : the most beautiful cove on the Giens peninsula. Its deep blue and turquoise waters are absolutely stunning. Hidden between cliffs and lush vegetation, it’s a refreshing reward after a scenic hike. We discovered it during our first visit and were completely dazzled by the view. For a breathtaking panoramic perspective, head to Cap Rabarassa.

👉 Calanque du Blé : primarily accessible by sea, this impressive cove features towering cliffs plunging into crystal-clear water. It’s spectacular from above and a favorite spot for scuba diving enthusiasts.

👉 Crique du Chevalier : a tiny sandy beach located near the famous viewpoint overlooking the Minette and Séverine islets. Easier to access than the other coves, as it lies directly along the hiking trail. The seabed is fascinating here, and if you swim slightly to the left, you’ll even discover a small sea cave.

👉 Calanque du Four à Chaux : The easiest cove to access among those mentioned. Yet it’s no less charming. Its typically Mediterranean setting gives it authentic character. Ideal for families and for watching the sunset.

By paddle or canoe-kayak…
… This is our favorite way to explore the sea, gliding along the coastline, immersed in the elements. It also allows access to hidden spots unreachable by land. If weather conditions are favorable and you have an adventurous spirit, we highly recommend a paddleboarding or kayaking trip along the Giens peninsula. You can launch your own equipment from Almanarre beach or from La Madrague harbor. Rentals are also available directly at the port or along the Madrague road, for example Kayak Giens Paddle.
You’ll be free to explore the peninsula’s spectacular cliffs, stop for a swim, and even discover magical sea caves particularly near Pointe des Chevaliers, Calanque du Blé, and Escampo-Barriou.
Please note : Sea caves are protected environments and home to fragile species. It is essential to respect these areas and navigate carefully.
GIENS PENINSULA: WHAT TO DO IN THIS LITTLE PARADISE ?
Visit the Charming Village of Giens
The village itself is small, but it’s absolutely worth a visit for its artisan boutiques, its picturesque narrow streets (including the Vieille rue), and the lovely Saint-Pierre church.
As a bonus, Square Boualam offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view over Almanarre Beach, the salt marshes, and, on the other side, the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding islands.

You can also walk down to the Port du Niel in about 10–15 minutes to admire its traditional fishing boats. A few excellent seafood restaurants line the harbor, and there’s even a fresh fish market every morning (if the catch has been good!).

Walk Through the Pesquiers Salt Marshes
Right in the heart of the famous double tombolo connecting the mainland to the Giens peninsula, you’ll find the Pesquiers salt marshes, a peaceful and preserved natural area.
Here, flamingos and other remarkable bird species have made their home. It’s an easy 45-minute walk along the salt ponds, perfect on foot or by bike, with friends or family. (Be sure to visit during opening hours.)

Guided group tours are organized throughout the year, and we highly recommend choosing a guided visit, it’s always more insightful and engaging. Don’t forget your binoculars !
Experience the Thrill of Watersports
If you’re passionate about watersports, or eager to try sailing, windsurfing, wing foiling, or kitesurfing, you’ll find plenty of schools along Almanarre beach.
A world-renowned spot for windsurfers and kiteboarders, this five-kilometer stretch of beach offers ideal conditions to learn or improve your skills. Whether you’re going solo or with friends, instructors share their expertise in a safe and dynamic environment.

Most clubs receive excellent reviews. If we had to recommend one, it would be Kitextrem. You’ll also find watersports options near La Bergerie beach.
Explore La Capte
Located along the road to Giens near the Pesquiers salt marshes, La Capte is a peaceful seaside neighborhood with shops, hotels, restaurants, and cafés.
A small market takes place every Friday, perfect for picking up Provençal specialties. Just steps from the beach, La Capte is an ideal base if you want easy access to both the sea and the Giens peninsula.
