DAY 1 : TOULON, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HARBOR IN EUROPE

This first day begins with the discovery of a famous city in the Var bordered by a magnificent harbor. If you are looking for things to do in Var, starting with Toulon is an excellent idea. Here are the best activities to do in Toulon :

Climb Mount Faron

Gain some altitude with a climb up to Mount Faron, either on foot or by cable car. The panorama from the summit is superb: the vast city below and, beyond it, the wide expanse of sea surrounded by the impressive Cap Sicié and the Saint-Mandrier peninsula. If you enjoy sporty walks, we recommend the hike via the two military forts. It presents no real difficulty, except for the elevation gain. What you’ll love : a true change of scenery close to the city, the discovery of the military forts and, above all, breathtaking panoramas.

Baou, Gros Cerveau, Coudon… there are several other hills around Toulon, offering many hiking possibilities with spectacular views !

The most beautiful beaches in Toulon

Besides the famous Mourillon beaches, Toulon is home to two beautiful coves : Méjean and Magaud . They are real natural jewels just a stone’s throw from the city, with exceptional underwater fauna and flora that will delight snorkeling enthusiasts. Our favorite pastime : counting how many starfish we can spot in a single day !

Magaud cove is more intimate, while Méjean cove, which is larger, makes it easier to find a spot. The latter is quite picturesque, with its small fishing village that almost looks like a piece of Greece.

Museums and exploring the old town

Toulon is home to many museums, including the famous Naval museum which traces the history of the port and the Royal Navy. The Art Museum is also worth a visit, particularly for its surprising library.

Take the opportunity to explore the old town, with its traditional market on Cours Lafayette, and just below it the lively harbor lined with numerous restaurants. A guided food tour is also a great opportunity to discover the culinary specialties of the city.

Exploring Toulon is definitely one of the most interesting things to do in Var, especially if you enjoy culture, views and seaside atmosphere.

DAY 2 : HYÈRES AND ITS NATURAL TREASURES

Hyères is an extraordinary town with a natural heritage that absolutely must be discovered. It therefore fully deserves its place among the best things to do in Var.

Porquerolles, the pearl of the Port-Cros National Park

The Porquerolles island is the best-known of the Golden Islands. For us, it is a must-see if you had to choose among the most beautiful islands in Var.

Accessible by navette shuttle boat from la Tour Fondue, you can also discover it from every angle during a boat excursion. Between dream beaches, endless vineyards and typically Mediterranean nature, you will spend an unforgettable day.

The Porquerolles island can be explored on foot or by bike (rent your bike once you arrive at the port). Cars are prohibited except for professionals. The jewels of this little paradise are Notre Dame beach and Argent beach.

Visit the old town of Hyères and its remarkable gardens

If you are staying in Hyères during your trip in Var, then exploring the old town is essential, particularly because of its many elevated viewpoints.

Pass through the Massillon gate and walk up the street until you reach the square of the same name. You will then need to climb further to Saint-Paul church and Sainte-Claire park to admire the magnificent panoramas over the city and the Mediterranean Sea. It is also a great spot to watch the sunset.

It should be noted that Sainte-Claire park, Olbius Riquier garden, and Saint-Bernard park are part of Hyères’ remarkable gardens : true green havens in the heart of the city.

The Giens peninsula, between hikes and beaches

Enjoy the exceptional nature offered by the Giens peninsula, with its vast sandy beaches, translucent-water coves and breathtaking coastal landscapes. The main activity that best allows you to appreciate the wild beauty of this peninsula is walking : we love the famous hike to Pointe des Chevaliers.

If you have an adventurous spirit, we also recommend a canoe or paddle outing from the Madrague harbor. You will then discover superb coves and calanques, as well as sea caves. > Learn more about what to do on the Giens Peninsula.

BOAT TRIP –

DAY 3 : BEACHES AND OTHER TREASURES OF THE VAR COAST

For this third day, let yourself be carried by the gentle atmosphere of the Var coastline, between paradise beaches, perched villages and an exceptional garden overlooking the Mediterranean. Exploring this coastline is without question one of the most enjoyable things to do in Var.

The most beautiful beaches in southern France

The must-see on this stretch of coastline is, for us, the sublime Estagnol beach. A landscape worthy of the Caribbean awaits you: shallow water and fine white sand that make it a true paradise. Take the opportunity to discover its neighbor, Grand Jardin beach, wilder but just as idyllic. It is accessible by boat, paddleboard or canoe (about 15 minutes), or via the coastal path (25 minutes from Estagnol, 45 minutes from Cabasson beach).

Hidden below a cliff, the small Jean Blanc beach is also one of most beautiful beach in Var , with sparkling sand and turquoise water.

The flower-filled village of Bormes-les-Mimosas

This small village perched above the Var coastline is, in our opinion, the most beautiful in the region.

First climb up to the castle to admire the sweeping view over the hills and the Mediterranean sea. Then wander through the flower-filled streets, decorated with mimosas in winter and bougainvillea in spring. You will be charmed by the colorful façades, beautifully decorated houses and the lovely plant-filled squares. Don’t hesitate to browse the small local product shops or take a relaxing break on a terrace. In short, discover the Provençal art of living!

You can complete this outing with a guided visit of Fort Brégançon, the summer residence of the French Republic’s Presidents. Perched on its rocky promontory, this historic site also offers impressive views over the coastline.

The natural treasures of Domaine du Rayol

Just a stone’s throw from the Lavandou and its dream beaches, the Domaine du Rayol is an exceptional botanical garden.

On a guided or self-guided visit, you can admire a wide variety of plants within a magnificent site on the Mediterranean coast. It is a real change of scenery, with vegetation from different regions of the world (Australia, arid America, South Africa, California, the Mediterranean, etc.).

It takes about 4 hours for the visit if you take your time. > All you need to know

During your walk, don’t miss the superb Figuier cove just below the estate. If the weather allows, it is even possible to take part in a guided sea hike.

DAY 4 : DISCOVER SAINT-TROPEZ DIFFERENTLY

If you are searching for things to do in Var for a week, visiting the Gulf of Saint-Tropez is for us an essential stop. Beyond the clichés often associated with the chic town of Saint-Tropez, the surrounding landscapes and villages are definitely worth the visit.

Hike to Cap Taillat or relax at Pampelonne beach

Starting from Escalet beach, discover the magnificent Bonporteau bay along the coastal path. This walk will lead you to the impressive Cap Taillat, passing turquoise coves surrounded by rounded rocks, a landscape reminiscent of the Seychelles. It takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes round trip for this easy hike.

Bonporteau bay can also be explored by paddleboard, with a swimming stop at the discreet Briande beach, or during a catamaran excursion.

For a more relaxing day, head to the legendary Pampelonne beach ! Stretching over 5 kilometers, you will easily find space to lay down your towel and enjoy the turquoise sea. The beach is dotted with private beach clubs and well-known bars and restaurants, some more exclusive than others.

Visit the chic and authentic Saint-Tropez

Far from the glitter and jet-set image, discover the history and authenticity of this small Mediterranean village. Besides the harbor and its line of luxurious yachts, explore the streets, hidden squares, artisan shops and monuments with the help of a guided tour of Saint-Tropez to uncover all its secrets.

Don’t miss the “postcard view” of the village bell tower from the Citadel !

The most beautiful villages in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez

During your holidays in Var, we recommend to visit Grimaud, Gassin, and Ramatuelle, the most beautiful villages in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Small cobbled streets, stone houses with flower-filled façades : you will certainly fall under their charm during your visit. In these perched villages, with their medieval and Provençal atmosphere, the views are always breathtaking.

Our personal favorite is Grimaud, with the superb remains of its historic fortress, listed as a historical monument.

As these villages are geographically close to each other, you can easily visit all three in a single afternoon, another great way to experience the many things to do in Var.

BONUS DAY: THE LEGENDARY ESTÉREL AND ITS COVES

Between red rocks and a sea shimmering with deep blue and turquoise hues, the Estérel is a unique place whose landscapes, reminiscent of the Grand Canyon, will leave no one indifferent.

The mythical Corniche d’Or and Its dream coves

The Corniche d’Or is an exceptional coastal road that runs along the shoreline between Saint-Raphaël and Mandelieu-la-Napoule. The panorama is superb all along the route, with striking contrasts between the red volcanic rock and the deep blue of the sea. It is possible to stop at certain points to take photos, but you will need to be careful as the road is winding and traffic is often heavy.

From the road you will overlook numerous coves and calanques, including Saint-Barthélémy, Notre-Dame, and Maupas, which are among the most beautiful in our opinion. And why not try an excursion to the Vieilles island ? This unusual rocky island, made up of coves, channels and natural arches, can be reached by boat or by canoe or paddleboard.

Discovering the Estérel coastline is certainly one of the most spectacular things to do in Var.

An insolit hike in the Estérel mountain

One of the must-do things to do in Var is hiking or cycling through the “massif de l’Estérel”. This mountain range is one of the symbols of the French Riviera, with magnificent turquoise coves stretching below. There are many trails where you can enjoy exceptional views over the Mediterranean as well as the striking contrast between the red rock, the green vegetation and the blue sea. Not to mention the wonderful variety of scents in the air : mimosa, lavender, thyme and more.

Among the many routes, we recommend the classic but sublime Pic du Cap Roux hike with the beautiful Saint-Barthélémy cove at its feet, a welcome reward after a few hours of effort !

A getaway to the villages of the Pays de Fayence

Wandering through the villages of the Pays de Fayence is the best way to discover the Var countryside. Clinging to the hillsides, these small villages are full of charm. Stroll through the cobbled streets, admire the small monuments, enjoy the charming little squares where it is pleasant to soak up the sun, and explore the traditional markets where you can stock up on delicious local products. It’s a postcard scene at every corner and a true Provençal way of life.

Be sure not to miss the classic village of Fayence, our personal favorite Callian, as well as Seillans and Mons.

DAY 5 : DISCOVERING THE PROVENCE VERTE

Before our final stop in the Verdon, we suggest making a stop in a discreet yet authentic part of the Var : the Provence Verte.

Charming villages of the hinterland

The discreet charm of Cotignac, Tourtour, Seillans, Barjols, Correns… Their gentle way of life, lush nature and magnificent waterfalls will delight lovers of local heritage. The most unique village for us is Cotignac, a village nestled at the foot of a tufa cliff formed by ancient waterfalls and dotted with troglodyte dwellings. Listed as a “village of character”, you will be charmed by its artisan shops, picturesque streets, shaded squares and Cours Gambetta, a lively square lined with bars and restaurants.

On the road to Cotignac, don’t miss a stop at the mystical Thoronet Abbey.

Admiring the shows of waterfalls

Crossed by the Argens river and its tributaries, the Provence Verte is full of natural treasures. Discover the famous Chutes du Caramy, the Sillans waterfall, the Villecroze caves, the Cassole waterfall near Cotignac, or the Vallon des Carmes in Barjols.

These enchanting rivers, pools and waterfalls can also be explored on foot, for example by following the hiking trail to the Sillans waterfall starting from the “Cascade de Sillans” parking area.

Please note that during periods of drought the waterfalls may not be flowing.

Exploring the vineyards with a tasting tour

The Var is also famous for its vineyards and prestigious wine estates. If you are a wine lover, discover the Côtes de Provence wine region through a tasting tour in renowned vineyards. Château d’Esclans, Saint-Martin, or Font du Broc will impress you with the history and craftsmanship of these wine professionals.

For wine enthusiasts, this experience is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable things to do in Var.

DAYS 6 & 7: THE WILD BEAUTY OF THE VERDON

For the final days of your holidays, set off to discover the wonders of the Verdon. Between spectacular gorges, emerald lakes and charming villages, you will have plenty of options to end your trip on a high note.

Discovering the Gorges from above on the “Route des Crêtes”

Admire the largest canyon in Europe by driving along the famous Route des Crêtes and its viewpoints overlooking the Verdon Gorges. It is an opportunity to contemplate this grandiose landscape and to watch the vultures flying above you. Our favorite viewpoints are La Carelle, L’Escalès, and La Dent d’Aire.

After this scenic drive, take the opportunity to visit Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a typical Provençal village listed among the most beautiful villages in France. Wander through its charming cobbled streets, browse the craft shops and pottery workshops, and enjoy the lovely squares filled with the scent of lavender.

Finally, don’t miss the panoramic view over the village rooftops from the Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir chapel.

Paddleboarding on the emerald waters of Sainte-Croix lake

The most popular activity, and the one we love doing every time we visit the Verdon, is paddleboarding. (Of course, there are other options such as electric boats, canoes or pedal boats. Instead of entering the Verdon Gorges from the Galetas bridge (often crowded during summer), we recommend enjoying the shores of Sainte-Croix lake near Bauduen or Salles-sur-Verdon. You will have a better chance of finding a quiet spot away from the crowds and appreciating the peacefulness of nature.

The must-do experience : paddling through the submerged forests around Costebelle island.

The peaceful Esparron lake and the Lower Gorges

Our favorite place in the Verdon is undoubtedly Esparron lake. Smaller than Sainte-Croix lake, it allows you to better appreciate the tranquility of the area and the vastness of the water, especially near Saint-Julien beach. It is also possible to explore the magnificent Lower Gorges (Basses Gorges) from Esparron-de-Verdon or from the Pont Coupé site, by paddleboard, canoe-kayak or electric boat.

If you continue as far as Quinson, you will discover along these 9 kilometers a breathtaking canyon with emerald waters, large limestone cliffs and lush vegetation clinging to the rock walls.

WHERE TO STAY TO VISIT THE VAR ?

Bormes-les-Mimosas : a great compromise if you want to explore the region while staying in the same accommodation during your holidays in Var. We recommend booking a room with a view at the Eden Rose Grand Hotel, a modern and comfortable hotel with a spa and an infinity pool.

Draguignan : a town in the Dracénie area of Provence that also places you close to many of the region’s main attractions.
